The fundamentals of basketball drills and basketball skills are the MOST important thing to master because they will make you and your team better no matter what age level or team you play for.
A basketball player will be faced with a variety of different situations:You’ll see different opponents that use different tactics (pressing, fast breaks, switching defenses, banging in the post, etc)You’ll face opponents that have heavily scouted you and know your offense inside and out. And you’ll also face other opponents that have never seen you before.You’ll see a different levels of competition from youth recreation leagues and possibly all the way to professional basketball.
Your middle school coach might like to press — and your high school coach might have a completely different style and like to slow things down.
1. Running Basketball Drills the Right Way
The first thing to realize is that the great players focus on the little things. Too many players make the mistake of starting the youth basketball drill and just running through the motions.To get better, each basketball drill needs to have a purpose and you really need to focus and work hard to improve.Practicing drills is when players get better. In fact, the most important aspect of getting better as a player is how you run those basketball drills.In order to get better, you need to practice over and over to develop good habits and muscle memory. If you don’t practice the RIGHT way, you’re just developing bad habits and training yourself to play the wrong way.
2. Competitive One on One
It is unfortunate that the game players play the most is also the least relevant to the game of basketball; “One-On-One.”Go past any schoolyard and you’ll see two players playing one-on-one.
It builds bad habits, limits understanding of the game and erodes needed basketball skills. Below are some different one-on-one basketball drills that might do a better job of improving players’ skills and help them reach playing objectives. These are also great basketball drills to simulate fast break situations.
3. Taps Drill

Drill Purpose:This drill and basketball skills improves ball control and rebounding around the hoop. You also improve your jumping.Throw the ball up against the backboard.

To develop strong finish off the lay-up, footwork and ball handling.
Players will work one at the time dribbling away from the basket using 1-2 dribbles.
Player will adjust the distance as they become better.
Make Use of the following movements to attack the basket:
High Post – Ball on the outside 2 dribbles
– Dribble inside hand – Go under basket facing the
– Dribble inside hand – Go under basket turning back to the
Players will dribble full speed make change hands low to the ground.
Players should be able to execute the moves properly with either hand.1 on 1 Low Post Recognition
Teach the post player to read and react to the defense when he is posting up.Procedure Place a passer on the wing and post player on low post.
The basketball training drills starts with a post feed.
On receiving the ball the post looks into the middle to explore his options.
If the coach on the other wings shows a target with this hand the post player will immediately pass the ball to him and r re post on the
If he does not show a target the post will make a strong post move to the basket and score.
Progressively the coach on the wing will start to move along the 3-point line to make the skip pass more difficult.
Another progressive way would be to make the coach cut to the basket.
If he shows a target with his hands the post will pass him the ball if he does not the post will wait until the lane is clear to
• Coach shows a target – Fan opposite, post up on other side
• Coach doesn’t show a target and moves along the 3-point line – Strong
• Coach shows a target and moves along the 3-point line – Fan opposite
• Coach starts up high and cuts to the basket and doesn’t show a target –
Wait until the lane is clear and makes a strong move
• Coach starts up high and cuts to the basket and shows a target – Passes
Post player needs to chin the ball and look middle.
On the skip pass make sure to step with your inside foot to protect the ball.
2 on 2 Full Court for Basketball Training Drills
To play 2 on 2 full courts.Procedure Two offensive and two defensive players will begin on one baseline.
One offensive player will inbound the ball to his teammate as they are defended.
The ball must be inbounded within the free throw line extended.
The players then play 2 on 2 full-courts.
If the defense gets are bound or steal, they go with it to the other end.
